The Otherworld are characters in Mario Mayhem and are the main antagonists of Super Mario: Gate to the Multiverse.

Appearance[]

There are three members of The Otherworld, which are referred to as the Leader, Codename 2 and Codename 3. They look like the Mario sprites from (in order) Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3, but with a deep purple tint and hidden eyes.

" ― Codename 3[source]

Codename 3 is the third member of The Otherworld. He is silent for the whole of Gate to the Multiverse, so we do not really see much of his character, but he becomes the main antagonist of Super Mario: Beyond The Bounds who leads Mario's greatest enemies in a plot to avenge the other two.

History[]

Super Mario Super Challenge[]

The Otherworld are three evil clones of Mario, who were waste products after the multiverse formed and were left stuck in its hub. Despite being stuck with very few resources, they were able to survive and vowed revenge against the creator of the multiverse. One day, they discovered Objan, Steve, and Tumble in the Multiverse Hub. They banded together, and the Otherworld Leader ran some tests on them. Finding that Objan was the most powerful, they planned to discard Steve and Tumble and use Objan for their future plans. The Otherworld Leader went to Objan and told him to snap his fingers. While the outcome of this is unknown, it most likely ended with Steve and Tumble's deaths.

Energy Arc[]

While they don't physically appear in the arc, Pixelcraftian said that they destroyed the book containing Energy before he was freed, retconning the entire arc before it began.

Super Mario: Gate to the Multiverse[]

While The Otherworld didn't appear in Super Mario Combat, their blood was used to create the Otherworld Cherry that was used on Luigi.

The Otherworld arrived in the Mushroom Kingdom through a red portal in Gate to the Multiverse and track Mario to Bowser's Castle. As the two exit, they kidnap Luigi and toss him into a portal. Mario rushes into the portal to save him, but this is revealed to be baiting him into what seems to be a trap. The Otherworld chase Mario through various past videos before cornering him in a doomed universe. The Leader explains that the doomed universe is a time loop that resets when the creator is destroyed, and a fight is about to take place in the courtyard that serves as the start of the loop. He gives Mario a choice: remain trapped in the loop or surrender and come with them. Mario chooses the latter and is trapped inside a stasis capsule as the Leader smiles that they finally have all of the multiverse cores, but Mario is then saved by Luigi. The Leader does not mind, as with all the cores collected, they have the power to control the multiverse, and they bid goodbye to the brothers before sending them back to the Mushroom Kingdom.

The Otherworld later decide to toy with Mario by sending him to Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout and then Super Mario Bros. 35, but Mario manages to escape both worlds, though not before The Otherworld has assembled an army to invade the Mushroom Kingdom, consisting of various fan-made Mario characters like Devil Mario, the CPU players from the battle royale and most of Bowser's minions who defected after his death. The Otherworld then invade and are also able to control Luigi's mind thanks to side effects of the Otherworld Cherry. The heroes lose, and Mario puts up a good fight but is defeated after the Leader pummels him with chunks of ground and the title for Super Mario Bros. Luigi regains control before he can finish Mario, so the Leader kills him with his hammer, but this allows Mario to recover and unleash a supercharged punch that severs the Leader's arm and killed him. Mario recovered his severed arm and gained access to the Multiverse.

Using this, he travels back in time to the events of Super Mario Combat and manages to prevent Bowser's death and Luigi from being given the Otherworld Cherry. When The Otherworld arrive in the new timeline, they sense that Mario has gone back in time to stop them and head out to search for him. Past Mario, Past Luigi and Future Mario manage to kill Code 2 and 3, but the Leader catches them and badly wounds Future Mario and battles Past Mario who has the Hardcore Switch. Knowing he can't win, the Leader uses his hammer to destroy the ground, sending them both into the void, and the Leader plans to keep him here forever along with Future Mario and Past Luigi, but is sent hurtling back in after Future Mario shoots him in the face with a gun. The Leader begs for mercy, but Past Mario obliterates him with the Hardcore Switch before Past Luigi lowers a vine down so he can climb back up. With The Otherworld defeated, their plan is thwarted before it can even begin.

Super Mario: Beyond the Bounds[]

At the end of Mario & The Great Chase, Codename 3 is revealed to still be alive, as he still had 2 lives remaining when Mario killed him. Despite this, his neck remained severely injured and he had to stitch it back onto his neck with a wire. Vowing to avenge the Leader and Codename 2, he recruited Syobon, MX, Mr. L and Cherry to assist him in his plan.

Trivia[]

  • The Otherworld didn't have to eat. If they decided to, they'd eat anything edible in the Multiverse Hub.
